Nomination Criteria, Rules, and Procedures
Since 1989, the New Jersey Lesbian and Gay Coalition and the
Personal Liberty Fund have conferred achievement awards upon individuals who have distinguished themselves through their efforts to enhance
the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and intersexed (GLBTI) community in New Jersey. The annual
awards have been given for significant one-time achievements or for sustained work or leadership over a period of
time. A committee of prior award recipients select the awardees.
Criteria:
- A single, extraordinary achievement OR
- Longtime ,consistent leadership and/or loyalty
to efforts benefiting the GLBTI of New Jersey
Rules/Procedures:
- The published deadline must be met (August 1, 2007).
- All nominations must be submitted on the official form or must include the same information under the same headings in the same order.
Nomination Forms are available on
http://www.njlgc.org/honor and will be distributed to GLBTI groups within the state.
- Awardees must agree to be present at the awards ceremony to receive the award.
- The number of awardees each year should be no more than five.
- The selection committee must be comprised of past recipients, appointed by the
President of the Board of
Directors, with the advice and consent of the executive committee.
- Special awards, such as the following, should be awarded infrequently and are outside the scope of the
achievement awards:
D. Bennett Mazur Award - this is named for the prime sponsor of the New Jersey Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights Bill. This individual worked tirelessly for years on the community's behalf.
Rebecca Locketz Legal Award - given to someone who has been a legal advocate or who has made an outstanding contribution on the community's behalf for many years. This award is named for an activist and leader in the NJLGC who
passed away in
1997.
Religious/Spiritual Outreach Award - given to a clergy member who has gone out of his/her way to provide outreach and programming to the
GLBT community, who has spoken out on our behalf and offered us a welcoming home in
their house of worship.
- As in all things, the committee will strive for the ideal of gender and racial parity.
- No awards are automatic.
