This organization has begun the Healthy Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Students Project (HSP), http://www.apa.org/ed/lgby.html, which is designed to serve the needs of all personnel working with this student population. The Lesbian & Gay Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union has launched "Every Student, Every School." The in-service training program at the core of this campaign is geared to teach educators about the problems caused by homophobia in schools and how to take positive steps to resolve them. "Every Student, Every School" offers more than just the training program for schools. It also offers resources concerning how to advocate for district-wide nondiscrimination and anti-harassment policies, and how to resolve such common gay-related student issues as same-sex dates for proms and gay student clubs.

This organization produces the most frequently sited source of information for educators. It identifies sources of information and guidelines for administrators, teachers, GLBT students and their families when dealing with instances of harassment. The Resource Guide is available for download, at no cost, on the website.

The Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine has two programs available to schools. They focus on testing, treating and prevention aspects of teen health:

  • STOP (Spend Time on Prevention)
    The program uses a mobile unit to visit Newark area high schools. It provides information on HIV and free HIV testing. If a teen tests positive, the teen is enrolled in the START program.
  • POWER Outreach: Peer Outreach Workers Educating Risk Takers

    This is a teen theatrical group that presents programs on substance abuse, HIV and sexual orientation for Newark-area schools.

This department publishes guides for schools on addressing harassment and hate crimes toward students, and for developing school and district policies and procedures around these issues. Probably most useful is the guide, "Protecting Students from Harassment and Hate Crime."
